Hi everyone,

I've bought one of these cheap Chinese projectors off Ebay (I know, I
know) and the fans in it are very loud. I'm guessing that they are
just standard PC fans so the plan was to take the case apart and see if
I could just change them for silent fans but unfortunately one corner
of the case refused to part and not wanting to brake anything I decided
to get some advice before having another go at removing the case.

So if anyone has any experience of this type of projector
http://tinyurl.com/3bgzvk or can offer me any advice on changeing the
fans it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Moose

Moose, if you end up not being able to switch the fans, then maybe a
hush-box might help.

the fans make a lot of noise because they move
a huge amount of air, a quiet fan does not move
as much air.Your projector will be quiet and
melted. the bulb life will be shorter, the mirrors
are made of plastic and these DO melt.

Actually, many factors determine the amount of air flow -vs- noise.
Bearings, blade shape, pitch and speed are just a few.

Cheaply designed/built fans can have horrible air flow and be extremely
noisy, whereas a well designed fan can produce a higher cfm and be less
audible.

OP could very well replace the fan with a better one and achieve close
to the desired results.

On the other hand, polish a turd...

Usually the noise is from pushing the air too hard. You can have greater cfm,
lower noise, and the same size but only get to pick two.
A well designed cooling system will usually employ a slower larger fan.

Or just slow down the existing fan by 50%. It won't reduce the CFM enough
to matter but will reduce noise significantly. Closely monitor the exhaust
temperature and the enclosure temperature after any modifications. If the
exhaust isn't much hotter than the modification was probably safe.

I went hunting for quiet fans for our treadmill. After finding test results
online and a special waffle design blade, I bought the quiet breaktru fans.
Unfortunately although they were quiet they obviously did not move nearly as
much air as the originals. My guess is finding a quiet fan that moves a lot
of air is impossible.

800x480 native resolution?

Maybe the best way to quiet the fan is to leave the unit off. :p

[Am I the only one that finds it apropos the dealer name is Comedy Shop?]

In the US, Epson sells some refurbished projectors cheap that might be a
better deal. Check their web site.

hose ducts installed so as to route the projector air
from a refrigerated source would be quite desirable,
however buying a real projector may be the next
step. A real projector has 3 lenses and no mirrors.
